Things to do in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight!

Is situated on the East of the Isle of Wight and was awarded Village of the Year in the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2019 as well as being the largest village in England! It boasts a popular destination for sailing, along with its sandy and rugged coastlines, rock pools and stunning panoramic views out to sea. Perfect for an evening summer’s coastal walk. Bembridge also has three popular beaches, a harbour and its own airport. The three beaches; Bembridge Beach, Lane End and the Ledge are very popular for exploring the coastlines and taking in the fresh sea breeze. These are some of the best on the Isle of Wight to go rock pooling. Grab a crabbing line, and a bucket, and you can spend hours finding all sorts of sea creatures, from shrimps to lobsters! Bembridge Harbour is at the heart of a Special Area of Conservation, as well as being a thriving and active home to 2 yacht clubs, an angling club, a small commercial fishing fleet and a number of marine businesses.

Bembridge Windmill

The Bembridge Windmill is the only surviving windmill on the Isle of Wight! As part of the National Trust, this little gem is a Grade 1 listed building and one of the island’s most iconic landmarks. Built around 1700, it last operated in 1913 but still has most of its original machinery intact. The Windmill is open to visitors from April – September, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 10:30am – 17:00pm. You can go inside to learn about how the windmill operated. Take a stroll around the surrounding countryside and along the Culver Trail where you will discover a stunning coastal walk across the Downs.

Bembridge is home to the all-weather Lifeboat named Alfred Albert Williams and, the inshore Lifeboat, Norman Harvey. The all-weather boat is situated in the new offshore boat house at the end of the pier. This was built in 2009 in order to house the new Tamar class Lifeboat. The station and RNLI shop are open to visitors from 2pm – 4pm during the week, and 11am – 4pm at the weekend. During your visit to the Lifeboat station you will learn about the history from 1867, when Bembridge Lifeboat was first established, through to now. There are educational activities inside for the children to take part in. During the summer you can watch the crew launch the boat(s) for practice night which commences most Tuesday’s at around 7pm. In August there is a Bembridge Lifeboat open day to raise money for the RNLI. The open day consists of water safety demonstrations, stalls, games and a launch of both lifeboats for a planned rescue so that you get to see the crew in action. Sometimes the Coastguard helicopter even makes an appearance!

Walking Routes in Bembridge

If you’re looking to explore the sights around Bembridge, there are plenty of walks to choose from. There are many footpaths and bridleways in the area, offering a variety of walks, across farmland, over the downs, and through woodland.
The Culver Trail walk takes approximately 1.5 – 2 hours to complete and takes you to the downs of Culver cliffs with panoramic views across the bay. Why not also stop off at The Culver Haven Inn for a well deserved drink, spot of home-made cooking or even an Ice cream in the height of summer.

Sallys Riding School

Sally’s Riding School caters for all riders from absolute beginners through to established riders. Their aim is to provide a safe riding environment, so riders can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery and surroundings. Sally’s Riding School is located at their Bembridge stables from September to May, and you will find them at Nodes Point during the summer.

Tackt-Isle Adventures

If you’re looking for a place to go for an action-packed adventure then Tackt-Isle Adventures is the place for you and the family. Tackt-Isle is situated in St Helens, just a short distance away from Bembridge beach. They offer water sports such as sailing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and windsurfing. Don’t worry if you don’t have much experience with watersports because they have all the kit, skills and experience to help you!

Bembridge is a very popular destination for sailing.

Bembridge Heritage Centre

Bembridge Heritage Centre has recently moved to a new location. You will now find them in Weaver’s Yard, Lane End. The centre is open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 3pm. The centre is run by volunteers with a passion for Bembridge. It is free to enter and you will learn a lot about Bembridge and its history during your visit.

Eating Out in Bembridge

At the heart of Bembridge village there are a number of independent shops, cafes and restaurants to choose from. Why not take a trip to Ye Olde Village Inn. A newly refurbished pub situated in Bembridge Old Village since: 1787! You will get a real local feel at the Village Inn, which is what Bembridge is all about. Their motto is ‘Every visitor is a local, and every local is our guest’. The Village Inn is famous for its home cooked food, namely their stone baked pizzas and Sunday roasts, as well as an excellent selection of ales and wines. They pledge to use locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, including meat from Woodford’s Butchers, which is across the road from the pub, and vegetables from The Farm Shop just 190 yards down the road! Their menu caters for those with special diets, including vegans.

Having experienced this ourselves, the Olde Village Inn is everything you expect from a marvellous village pub! As we entered the pub we received a warm and friendly welcome from the staff, there was a great atmosphere and the seating was well spaced. If you’re looking for a place for a Sunday roast then this hidden gem is for you, you will receive great service with generous portions! And if you are a fan of your homemade yorkies then you won’t want to miss out on these. Highly recommend you visit this pub if you’re visiting or staying in Bembridge.

Travelling Car Free on the Isle of Wight

How to get to Bembridge from ferry ports by car

There are lots of easy ways to get yourself onto the Island. If you’re in your car then you have a choice of car ferries ( Wightlink ) run from Portsmouth which is your nearest port to Ryde, and Lymington and then you have ( Red Funnel ) from Southampton which all run frequently. Don’t forget if you book with us you can take advantage of our travel discount.

How to get to Bembridge from ferry ports as foot passengers

You can catch the Wightlink fastcat via Portsmouth to Ryde, then hop on the number 8 bus from Ryde esplanade which will take you through to Bembridge where you can stop off at various bus stops in the village.

You can also catch the Red Jet from Southampton to Cowes where there is a bus that runs from outside the terminal into Newport town where you would catch the number 8 from Newport to Bembridge.

Hovertravel provides the fastest Isle of Wight ferry route across the Solent, and is the world’s only year round passenger hovercraft service. The Hovercraft runs from Southsea to Ryde and takes just 10 minutes! Once you arrive in Ryde you can walk a few minutes along to the bus station, where you can hop on the number 8 bus to get you to Bembridge.

The Needles Breezer is one of the most spectacular bus rides in all of England, an open-top ride with views that will simply take your breath away, with buses running up to every 30 minutes.

Our Favourite Things To Do In Seaview

Seaview sits to the eastern end of the town of Ryde, known for its Edwardian charm and maritime culture with picturesque views across Solent. In this post, we will show you the best things to do in Seaview. Start planning your next getaway!

This sailing village is one of the Island’s most desirable places to live and is home to some of the best beaches on the Isle of Wight including Seagrove Bay and Priory Bay which boast panoramic views towards the mainland, the Solent sea forts and passing ships and ferries.

It is a magnet for sailors and seafarers too with a strong nautical heritage, its very own sailing club and an annual sailing regatta.

The Seaview Regatta is an annual event held in mid August. There are lots of activities to watch, or take part in, including sailing, tug of war, beach sports, swimming, diving & rowing. The regatta concludes with a grand firework display!

On our visit, the first thing we did was to take a stroll around the Hersey Nature Reserve, known for its open water marshland and meadows, which attract an amazing array of birds and wildlife. Whilst we were lucky to go on a beautiful sunny day in February, wellie boots were a must, due to the muddy pathways from the recent rainfall. During our walk, we spotted these graceful swans grazing on the wetlands. It’s such a peaceful setting and a must for you avid bird watchers and nature lovers.

The reserve details a list of the birds that you can spot at certain points of the year.

Grey Hernon (Can be seen all year round. Will often stand motionless in shallow water then dart its head down to catch fish, frogs and other prey)
Common Tern (A summer visitor to the UK, the common tern is a little like a gull but has a forked tail, Terns are expert divers and nover overhead to pinpoint fish below)
Moorhen (Common all year round, often seen on streams and ponds)
Cormorant (A supreme fisher and can often be seen standing prominently with its wings out, after diving to feed)
Mute Swan (A familiar and elegant wetland bird)
Coot (Found on ponds and lakes all year round around the coast in winter. All black body apart from its beak and a white shield on its forehead)
Kingfisher (Seen on lakes, wetlands and rivers all year round, moving to estuaries in winter. Surprisingly hard to see, usually just a blue flash and a piercing whistle)
Little Egret (This continental bird first arrived in Britain in the late 1980s but is now a very common sight, especially along the shores of the Solent. It looks and behaves exactly like a small white heron)
Brent Goose (A winter visitor to coastal areas. This small goose often appears in large and noisy flocks)
Oystercatcher (Feeds on shellfish it finds in the mud and shallow water, cracking them open with its powerful beak)

From here we wanted to grab a bite to eat in the village and do some window shopping! It’s only a short walk from the Reserve to the village.

We took the scenic route along the sea wall, the tide was in and we did get a little wet from the waves crashing into the wall, so do be careful and check the tides. The path took us towards the Old Fort, a seaside pub and restaurant in the heart of Seaview. We stopped and had an indulgent hot chocolate to warm us up, with marshmallows and cream! It was to die for!.

We carried on along the seafront and took the public footpath to Circular Road and on through to the High St. We decided to carry on down Pier Road to Seagrove Bay. In summertime the beach is best known for its windsurfing, surfing, kayaking. It was so lovely to stop and take in the breathtaking views and remind ourselves at how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place.

With our tummies rumbling we took ourselves back up along Pier Road, there are some amazing little shops here, such as This and That which is full of Island related items for your home. When you turn the corner you are in the heart of the village, which is lined with more unique independent shops and cafes.

We decided that we would try out Lilys Cafe, which has sandwiches & baguettes, coffees, teas and delicious cakes. I had one of the best homemade brownies I had ever tasted! They are also vegetarian friendly and offer gluten free options as well as vegan. Why not take your dog for a walk and enjoy some lunch at Lilys, they are dog friendly too! A great pit stop after exploring Seaview.

Places to eat in Seaview

If you are looking for something more substantial to eat, here are a few of our favourite places.

The Old Fort

The Old Fort is a multi-award winning seaside pub & restaurant in the heart of Seaview. It is located right on the water’s edge on the Esplanade and has an outdoor beachfront patio that offers sweeping panoramic views of the Solent.

They serve a mix of delicious pub classics, through to mouth watering daily specials, and are always looking to provide fresh, local and seasonal produce! As well as catering for Vegans, Vegetarians, Gluten Free and Dairy Free – So there is something for everyone to enjoy! There are amazing dishes to choose from, superb food at a lovely new designed restaurant, we definitely recommend!

They are also dog friendly so, if you have a four legged friend with you, then they welcome well behaved dogs outside on the patio, and downstairs in the pub!

The Boathouse

The Boathouse, situated on the fringe of the chic village of Seaview is an idyllic beachside venue offering quality dining by the sea. They pride themselves on offering superb ales and an extensive wine selection to compliment their award winning food.

Puckpool Point features a natural sheltered bay offering a large expanse of sand and a gently sloping beach, which becomes very popular with tourists and local residents during the summer season. There is a promenade leading the whole way along to Ryde which is perfect for a stroll or bike ride.

Puckpool Park is just a stone’s throw away from the beach. There is a children’s play area, crazy golf and tennis courts, as well as lots of grass space for games and picnics! During the summer months there is an outdoor cinema at Puckpool; Pictures in The Park, hosted by The Old Barracks Restaurant and Tea Gardens.

What to do in Seaview?

One of the best things to do in Seaview is explore by foot. There are some amazing coastal routes to take, especially the Ryde to Seaview / Seagrove Bay . A great walk for all the family with amazing views along the way. The route is suitable for pushchairs, although the path is a little bit bumpy at the Seaview end, and it has plenty of places to stop on route for refreshments.

If you wish to continue the path, past Nettlestone Point and the well-known Priory Bay which is approximately a ten-minute walk from the village of Seaview. This stretch of beach can only be reached at low tide and is filled with white sand and offers excellent swimming conditions.

Dog Walkers

Seaview bay is a great place to take your four-legged friend, although dogs are not permitted on the beach here between the 1st of May and the 30th of September. However, a little further along, Seagrove Bay is dog friendly all year round! The beach does disappear at high tide, so it is a good idea to check the tide table before you visit! Brading Marshes

This is one of the most beautiful Isle of Wight walks. There are various different places you can start and finish the route.

If you fancy a bit of a challenge; you can start at Bembridge Windmill and make your way down, through Brading, back through St Helens and along Bembridge Harbour. Alternatively, you can walk along the footpath along Bembridge Harbour, which is all flat, and still get to experience the beautiful sights and wildlife that the marshes have to offer!

The Seaview Experience

This is a lovely walk to do on a sunny day! Starting in Ryde enjoy the sea views as you make your way across the seafront to Seaview. Once you get to Seaview you can make your way further along to St Helens Duver. This can be accessed along the beach if the tide is low, or through the footpaths along Seagrove Bay if not. ‘

This is a 2.5km walk, mainly flat but there are some hills, which should be good for children and dogs too!

The Tennyson Trail

This is one of the harder Isle of Wight walks on the island. However, it is worth it for the amazing views once you get to the top of Tennyson Down and to The Needles! The Tennyson trail is a dog friendly 7mile walk, that is up hill for the most part. It will take you up to Tennyson monument, across the down and along to The Needles Old Battery, towards Alum Bay.

The Isle of Wight Walking Festival

The Isle of Wight Walking Festival takes place twice a year. The Spring event starts on the 13th of May and continues through to the 21st. There is a second event in the Autumn, this runs from the 7th of October through to the 15th. This festival has been recognized as one of the UK’s longest running walking festivals. It started in 1997 with 39 different routes, and now boast over 80 different routes to choose from!

The Isle of Wight is home to over 200 miles of cycle tracks. There are different routes for different abilities, all of which offer stunning views of the island! People often visit purely to experience the cycling scene – some people even refer to it as the bicycle island!

The most popular cycling route, and challenge, on the island is the Round the Island Route. This takes you around the whole island and is roughly 65miles long!

There are also cycling events that happen on the island throughout the year. The Radonnee being the main one. This event offers the choice of two different routes, 100km or 55km. It is a family open road cycling event, and it is free to take part! This event normally takes place around April time.

With the recent changes in fire regulations introduced by the UK Government in October 2023, we have embarked on a journey to ensure that our properties not only meet but exceed these new standards. In this blog post, we’ll delve into how these changes affect us and how Just for You Holiday Homes is making compliance easier for our owners.

Understanding the Impact on Owners:

The new fire regulations have brought about significant changes for holiday accommodation owners across the UK. Compliance with these regulations is essential not only for legal reasons but also for the safety and peace of mind of guests staying in holiday properties.

Our Journey to Compliance:

At Just for You Holiday Homes, we understand the importance of staying ahead of regulatory changes to maintain the highest standards of safety and service for our guests. To prepare for the new fire regulations, our team embarked on an extensive journey of research and preparation. Hundreds of hours were dedicated to understanding the intricacies of the new regulations and assessing how they would impact our properties.

With thanks to PASC UK , our team watched hours of webinars; hearing from people of authority within the Government, and those with knowledge from several different fields such as fire doors, fire suppression systems and general fire safety.

Once we felt we were armed with the knowledge we needed to move forward, each property in our portfolio underwent a meticulous assessment to identify any potential fire hazards and ensure compliance with the new regulations. From electrical installations to heating systems, furniture, and furnishings, measuring doors and organising smoke alarm installations, no aspect was overlooked in our quest to create a safe environment for our guests.

We understood that this journey could be daunting for property owners, which is why we made it our mission to make compliance as seamless as possible. From offering guidance and support to facilitating necessary assessments and upgrades, we stood by our owners every step of the way.

Collaboration:

We collaborated closely with our maintenance team and engaged local and national contractors to expedite the compliance process. By working together, we were able to streamline assessments, implement necessary upgrades, and provide our owners with the support they needed to navigate these changes with confidence. Our in-house maintenance team have gone above and beyond to ensure all work is carried out to the highest standards throughout. We have had a few ‘tricky’ properties when installing fire doors. However, these were tackled with ease by our team. To tackle the safety of some of our open-plan properties, our owners decided to install fire doors; meaning there was less open-plan area and less risk in the event of a fire. By being able to complete this work in-house, we are getting ahead and being able to provide safe houses, in compliance with the new fire safety regulations, in time for the busy season that awaits us.

This particular property required some rework of the structure surrounding the door, as it is an older house. Our maintenance team have worked wonders to ensure that the slick look of the house is maintained, at the same time offering utmost safety for our guests.

Fire Protection Measures: Enhancing Safety at Just for You Holiday Homes.

As part of our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our guests, Just for You Holiday Homes prioritises the implementation of robust fire protection measures. Here’s how we go above and beyond to create a secure environment for our visitors:

Installation of Fire Detection and Alarms:

The safety of our guests is further enhanced by installing smoke alarms in all bedrooms and common areas, along with heat alarms in kitchens and other high-risk areas. These alarms are interlinked to sound simultaneously, alerting occupants to the presence of a fire and enabling prompt action. We also have a D/deaf smoke alarm, that links with the smoke alarms throughout all of our properties, which can be requested upon booking.

Escape Plan Provision:

To assist guests in navigating our properties during emergencies, we provide a simple escape plan drawing. This ensures that guests, who may not be familiar with the property layout, can evacuate quickly and efficiently. We provide these floor plans within the guest guidebooks, both digitally and within the properties, which include information such as escape routes, smoke alarm locations and where fire-fighting equipment can be found.

Regular Maintenance and Testing:

We understand that the effectiveness of fire safety measures relies on regular maintenance and testing. That’s why we conduct routine checks and maintenance of all fire safety equipment and procedures. Our dedication to ensuring these systems work in practice underscores our commitment to guest safety. We have incorporated routine checks on smoke alarms and safety torches throughout our cleaning checklists, upon each check-out/changeover clean. This ensures peace of mind for our guests, as well as enhances our audit trail when it comes to complying with fire safety measures throughout all our properties.

Clear Escape Routes:

In compliance with legal requirements, we meticulously establish clear escape routes in all our properties. These routes are designed to facilitate swift and safe evacuation, taking into account the diverse needs of our guests, including elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and children. Our escape routes are equipped with fire-safe doors to enhance their effectiveness.

Emergency Lighting:

We understand the importance of adequate lighting during emergencies. That is why our holiday homes are provided with sufficient safety lighting throughout. While none of our current properties are big enough to require fully installed emergency lighting systems; we have ensured that all our properties have sensor safety torches provided throughout. These torches are plugged into the wall, meaning, should you need them, in the event of a power cut; be that from a fire or just in general, they will have sufficient charge.

Fire Escape Signs:

We have provided fire escape signs throughout our properties; containing instructions on what to do in the unlikelihood of a fire; including the advised assembly point, the address of the property and the What3Words which can be used to best advise emergency services of the location. These signs guide guests to safety during emergencies, ensuring a swift and orderly evacuation process.

Provision of Firefighting Equipment:

Although guests primarily focus on evacuating safely during a fire, we believe in being prepared for all eventualities. That’s why our properties are equipped with appropriate firefighting equipment and maintained to the highest standards. While guests are not expected to use this equipment – the priority should always be to evacuate the property as quickly and as safely as possible, we do provide fire extinguishers and fire blankets throughout our properties.

At Just for You Holiday Homes, we spare no effort in providing a safe and secure environment for our guests. Through the implementation of comprehensive fire protection measures, we strive to offer peace of mind and unforgettable experiences for all our guests, as well as reassurance that no holidays will be cancelled due to lack of compliance, especially once the mandatory national registration process for holiday lets comes to fruition across England, which is expected to be introduced by this summer.
